Moisés Patrício
It was on Instagram that I came across Moisés Patrício. I started to like his posts. They made me interested in his work. In particular, the ones on the hands that were holding some objects posing the question "Accept it?” I was intrigued and curious, so I continued to follow him.
Soon after, he was in New York at the same residency program as Santidio, another artist represented by Galeria Estação.
As the months went by, he was always very kind and dropped me little notes, until one day I met with him. Upon entering his studio I was startled. He was painting a female figure so strong that it caught me right away. He said he was resuming painting. On a table were more surprises: hair bands for the "Tributo ao Mestre Didi” (Tribute to Mestre Didi), lines of various colors and pieces of paper for the “Amarrações” (Lashings), another wonderful work. An endless creative explosion!
I asked who represented him and to my amazement he said he had no gallery. My immediate reaction: "Now you have one, Galeria Estação”. And so Moisés Patrício came to be integrated into our team of artists.
This is his first solo show in an art gallery. It is a pleasure to introduce him with a show curated by Ricardo Sardenberg.
I hope you enjoy it!

In Exuberância, Moisés Patrício presents a set of works and series that are marked by time, the sacred, the world we live in and the family. The works can be understood in the three series: Brasilidade (the concrete sculptures located in the center of the gallery), Album de Família - Family Album (the paintings that portray his spiritual family) and Homenagem ao Mestre Didi - Homage to Mestre Didi (the sculptures in loofah and colored hair tie). All these series are related to time and duration. Brasilidade is a freezing of time, like a photograph marked by its quick execution. Homenagem ao Mestre Didi is a continuous prayer practiced over months, if not years. Album de Família, on the other hand, reveals the artist not as someone who has the “genius”, the singularity of creating, but the artist as a result of living in a broad environment regulated by hierarchies proper to the family unit. This is where the relationships are based on respect for the elderly, initiation, sharing and the re-creation of knowledge.
Although Exuberância is found within the traditional white cube that regulates Western art, its power lies in indicating a cosmos outside the gallery container, typical of life, in which we continually seek to govern internal and external energies. It is here that Exuberância, by Moisés Patrício provides the encounter, in other words, the reunion between life and the sacred.

Moises Patrício – Exuberância (Exuberance)
Until December 12, 2020
Curated by Ricardo Sardenberg, Exuberância is Moises Patrício’s first solo show. Moisés is an artist who stood out in group shows including the celebrated Histórias
Afro-Atlanticas, at the Tomie Ohtake Institute, held in partnership with MASP (2018), “OSSO - appeal to Rafael Braga's broad right of defense” at the Tomie Ohtake Institute (2017) and ““Agora somos todxs negrxs?”, At Associação Cultural Videobrasil (2017).
The exhibition brings works that, according to the curator, can be understood in three series related to time and its thickness. The first serie, “Album de Familia” (Family Album) brings together paintings with which the artist pays homage to his spiritual family, active figures in the preservation and transmission of Afro-Brazilian culture, which remain invisible. Moises quotes, for example, Dona Ceci, until this day a fundamental person in the field of oral history, who collaborated with Pierre Verger in bridging the photographer into Candomblé. “Album de Familia” (Family Album) reveals the artist not as someone who owns the “Genius”, the singularity of creating, but the artist as a result of living in a medium regulated by hierarchies specific to the family sphere where relationships are based on respect for the elderly, initiation, sharing, and the reproduction of “knowledge ”, highlights the curator.
The “Brasilidade” series, presents the concrete sculptures located in the center of gallery, while in “Homage to Mestre Didi” the sculptures are focused in colored hair ties. “ ‘ Brasilidade’ is a freezing of time, like a photograph, and it is marked by its rapid execution, while ‘Homenagem ao Mestre Didi” (Tribute to Mestre Didi) is a continuous prayer practiced over months, if not years”, adds Sardenberg.
According to the curator, although Exuberance is within the traditional white cube regulator of Western art, its power lies in indicating a cosmos outside the gallery container, typical of life in which we continually seek to govern the internal and external energies. “And this is where Exuberância, by Moisés Patrício, provides the encounter, or why not say, the reunion between life and the sacred ”, he completes.
Moises Patrício 1984, São Paulo | SP - Brazil
Born in the South of the city of São Paulo, the artist later moved to the East later, close to the city center, where there were many references of economy, culture and history. It was also the place that gave the opportunity to meet Juan José Balzi and to become his assistant. Moises had his first contact with art at the age of 9. He works with photography, video, performance, rituals and installations in pieces that deal with elements of Latin, Afro-Brazilian and African culture. Graduated from the School of Communications and Arts of the University of São Paulo, he creates works that deal with sacred elements of Amerindian and Afro-Brazilian culture. A significant part of his work is the allusion to Candomblé, for which the sacred goes through the body and its potentials.
Since 2006, Moisés has carried out group actions in cultural spaces in São Paulo. Some of them stand out: Against, Again: Art Under Attack In Brazil, Anya and Andrew Shiva Gallery, New York, United States, 2019; Metropole: Experiência Paulistana, Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, São Paulo, SP, Brazil, 2017; Bienal de Dakar no Museu de Artes Africanas, Dakar, Senegal, 2016; A Nova Mão Afro-Brasileira, Museu Afro Basil, São Paulo, SP, Brazil, 2013-2014; Aparecida – A Virgem Mãe do Brasil, Museu Afro Brasil, São Paulo, SP, Brazil, 2012.
