RELEASE

The ninth edition of SP-Arte shows the best of contemporary art, represented by 122 galleries from 16 countries.

After Basel and Frieze, SP-Arte is the trade fair to have the most prestigious line-up of galleries from the whole world. This fair shall run from 3 April to 7 April at the Biennial Pavilion in São Paulo.

Responsible in 2012 for an edition of success and international repercussion, SP-Arte has once again attracted to Brazil the real cream of art galleries on the international circuit. This shall be the edition with most prominent Galleries, representing the most famous artists on the international circuit – no less than 30% of all participants come from countries such as England, the United States, France, Germany and Italy. In all, a total of 1223 galleries from 16 countries shall be present, 81 national and 41 foreign.

A pioneer of this genre in the country, SP-Arte has brought, ever since its origin, a constant search for innovation, having been consolidated as one of the most important trade fairs in the world and having definitely placed Brazil on the official calendar of trade fairs in the art segment. After Basel and Frieze, both in the Northern Hemisphere, the fact is that SP-Arte is the only art fair in the Southern Hemisphere to bring together such a star-studded cast of leading Galleries around the world.

This year, the trade fair shall take place between 3 and 7 April, at the Biennial Pavilion, where thousands of works of art shall be distributed in three floors with a total exhibition area of 17 thousand m2.

For example, the following internationally famous galleries shall be at the event, among others:

Gagosian (United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Greece, Switzerland and Hong Kong), Lisson (the United Kingdom, Italy and the United States), Pace (the United States, the United Kingdom and China), White Cube (the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Brazil), David Zwirner (the United States and the United Kingdom), Thaddaeus Ropac (Austria and Paris), Hauser & Wirth (Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States), Sprüth Magers (Germany, the United Kingdom), Continua (Italy, France and China), Neugerriemschneider (Germany), Elvira Gonzalez (Espanha), Franco Noero (Itália) and Lia Rumma (Itália).

Among the Brazilian galleries, we highlight DAN, Fortes Vilaça, A Gentil Carioca, Luisa Strina, Luciana Brito, Mendes Wood, Millan, Nara Roesler, Paulo Kuzcysnki, and Vermelho, among a host of others. These spaces set a panorama of Brazilian and international artistic production.

“The ninth edition of SP-Arte brings together an exceptionally interesting representative set of galleries, and this shall allow us to offer the visitors a unique opportunity to check the widest possible panorama of contemporary art in the world ever exposed in a fair in the country”, says Fernanda Feitosa, the idealiser and director of SP Arte.

Fernanda Feitosa adds that the growth of this event is the result of a gradual work effort that has also consolidated Brazil on the world map of major exhibitions: “The natural vocation of the art fair to expand the visibility of the art Market in a highly professional manner does surely make a contribution to this scenario, and also to the qualification of new generations of art collectors”, she says. “The interest that Brazilians have shown for this market has been getting more and more intense, with the previous editions of SP-Arte and, at the same time, there has been a greater recognition of Brazilian artists throughout the world. Galleries, museums and collectors have been investing in our country and also in our artistic production.”

Partnerships

In order to be part of the São Paulo art circuit during the event, the 2013 edition of SP-Arte shall expand the programme of partnerships with museums and institutions. The visitor of this edition that acquires a ticket to MAM, MIS, the Pinacothèque, MAC, SESC Pompéia, CCSP and Itaú Cultural, for the week immediately preceding the event, shall receive an invitation to visit the fair on 6 April or 7 April. “The partnerships have brought excellent results for all those involved and, due to this fact, we have decided to not only maintain, but also expand, the programme this year”, says Fernanda.

Curatorial Laboratory

In its second edition, the Curatorial Laboratory, the educational division of SP-Arte, as idealised and co-ordinated by Adriano Pedrosa, invited Young curators to send projects for exhibitions in a special section of the event, based on the collection of Works by artists represented by the participating galleries and independent references of the curators themselves. The projects approved are works of curators Fernando Oliva, from São Paulo, a critic and professor at FAAP and a doctoral student in Criticism and History of Art; Mariana Lorenzi Azevedo, an independent curator, graduated in Social Communications and Master in Arts Politics; Monica Espinel from Colombia, a Psychology graduate and a Master in History of Art who now lives in São Paulo; and Tomás Toledo, philosopher and co-ordinator of projects at Escola São Paulo.

“The success of the Project and the absolute approval of participants and public alike has made us keep the format of the laboratory of the previous edition. The project reinforces the discovery and the encouragement of new professionals who study and also act directly upon the market for plastic arts”, says Fernanda.
