The eighth edition of the SP-Arte exhibition shall take up three floors of the Biennial Pavilion, and all the floors shall welcome dozens of galleries and also special products, and the local editorial nucleus. Dates and times: 2012, 9 May / 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. preview for collectors and professional, 9 May, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. opening for guests, 10 May and 11 May, 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. open to the public, 12 and 13 May, 12 noon to 8 p.m. open to the public, with full tickets at R$ 30.00 and half price tickets at R$ 15.00.

SP-ARTE 2012 BRINGS TOGETHER THE BEST IN MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART IN SÃO PAULO

The SP-Arte, which occurs between 10 and 13 May at the Biennial Pavilion in São Paulo, now reaches its eighth edition with a new format and full of new developments. As this is the first fair of its kind in the country, SP-Arte brings in its origin a constant search for innovation, and it is this innovation which boosts the increase in the number of participating galleries: on 3 floors which this year have a total area of 15 thousand m2, there shall be no less than 110 galleries, including 27 from abroad. Among the foreign contingent, we can confirm the presence of Elvira Gonzalez, Elba Benitez, La Caja Negra e La Fábrica, all from Spain; the Gallery Filomena Soares, from Portugal; Anita Beckers, SwedishPhotography and Weingrül, from Germany, Yvon Lambert, from France; the Leon Tovar Gallery, from New York; Casas Riegner and Fernando Pradilla, from Colombia, and Sprovieri, from London. The Brazilian participants include Fortes Vilaça, LOGO, Luciana Brito, Nara Roesler, Millan, Vermelho, A Gentil Carioca, Choque Cultural, DAN, Jean Boghici, and Paulo Kuzcysnki, among others.

“The growth of the SP-Arte is the result of a gradual work project which has attracted the most famous collectors, marchands and plastic artists, and has consolidated Brazil on the world map of major trade fairs. Our vocation to expand the visibility of the art market in a highly professional manner surely contributes to this panorama in a significant manner”, explains Fernanda Feitosa, director of SP-Arte.

The director reinforces the role of the trade fair in nurturing what has been called “the creative economy”, in which culture, creativity and knowledge are raw materials of a new strategic vision of economic, social and environmental development. “We are aware of our role when faced with this new reality in which the art market is no longer restricted to a minority but rather shall be expanded in order to include more and more segments of society”, says Fernanda. This year, based on an agreement signed between the organisers of the event and the Secretariat for the Treasury of the State of São Paulo, the acquisitions made during the event shall be exempt from payment of sales tax (ICMS), a state tax which is calculated at 18% of the commercialisation of the work.

Fernanda has also celebrated partnerships which seek the integration of the arts circuit during the event. The visitor to this edition who buys a ticket for MAM, MIS and the Pinacothèque, as from April, shall receive an invitation to visit the Fair on 10 and 11 May. On the other hand, on buying an invitation to visit SP-Arte, the visitor shall receive, free of charge, a book of tickets to visit the four partner museums, valid between 10 and 13 May. The organisation of the event shall also provide a free van to transport the guests. Anyone with courtesy tickets may take the circuit between the Fair and the museums. “Our aim is to reinforce the city’s cultural vocation, promoting visits and also the interaction between the partner institutions”, says Fernanda Feitosa.

Curatorial Laboratory

Another major development in this edition is the implementation of the Curatorial Laboratory project, which is a natural consequence of the educational vein of the SP-Arte project and which has been planned with a lot of care by Fernanda Feitosa. The project, idealised and coordinated by Adriano Pedrosa, the new curator for education and public programmes of SP-ARTE, who invited young curators to send projects for exhibitions to be offered in a special section of the fair, based on the collections of artists represented by the participating galleries and independent references of the curators themselves. Four pre-projects shall be selected by Adriano Pedrosa and Rodrigo Moura, Curator de Inhotim, and the selected curators shall win, as a prize, a trip to visit Documenta 13, one of the most important art exhibitions in the world, which takes place every five years in the German city of Kassel. The next exhibition shall take place between June and September 2012. “This is part of our responsibility, as people encouraging art, nurturing mechanisms that reveal and train professional people who bring more and more professionalism and efficiency to the segment”, commemorates Fernanda.
